Jarod narrates the saga of his adventure in Las Vegas, as he reunites with Argyle ("Unforgotten" AKA "Amnesia" and "Unsinkable") to solve the mystery of who killed Dirty Willie, owner of the Alibar, and kidnapped Mona Jeffries, a pretty showgirl working there.
Besotted with Mona, Argyle lies and claims to be the partner of Dick Dixon, a private investigator who skipped town a year ago to avoid bill collectors and angry husbands. For protecting him from the Frost Brothers, who are putting the squeeze on him, Dirty Willie sends Mona to Argyle with a bucket of quarters. When he walks in on Willie's murders, Argyle realizes that he's in over his head and begs Jarod for his help.
Jarod assumes Dick Dixon's identity, even though nearly every man he meets, including Wayne Newton, tries to punch him in the face. He also learns to play golf in 56 minutes. Together he and Argyle locate Mona at an abandoned meatpacking plant that used to be called "Frost Brothers." Jarod discovers that Deputy Wyatt murdered Dirty Willie and kidnapped Mona in an attempt to force her to tell him where Willie hid a tape recording that would have incriminated Wyatt as an extortionist. After contacting the FBI, Jarod leaves Deputy Wyatt duct-taped to a chair in Dixon's office, along with the evidence to convict him.
By making a sizable donation to a charity favored by Wayne Newton, Jarod is able to arrange a personal visit between the singer and Argyle's widowed father, Benny. Benny is writing a new song for Newton to commemorate the night years ago when he and his wife, Adela, attended one of Newton's performances, changing their lives forever.
Acting on an intercepted e-mail between Jarod and one of his friends, Miss Parker and Broots set up a stake out in the honeymoon suite at the Fun City Motel in Las Vegas. Broots dozes off during his watch and has a bawdy dream about how he'd like things to be in his relationship with Miss Parker. Just before she douses him with a pitcher of cold water to wake him, his dream turns nightmarish as Mr. Raines, clad only in a leopard-skin Speedo, dances his way into the fantasy.
Agent Of The Year Zero
Jarod initiates a Pretend as Agent Jarod "Ellis" for the Immigration and Naturalization Services office in Riverview, Va., to help a blind Cambodian woman regain her sight and to apprehend Chen Thon, the Cambodian war criminal who caused her psychological blindness.
Lyle has arranged for Thon to be appointed as a cultural liaison to the U.S. Port Authority. Once in that position, Thon will easily be able to use his Cambodian connections to smuggle things in and out of the United States for Lyle.
In his guise as an INS agent, Jarod spirits Kim Che away from Centre sweepers who are after her because she can identify Thon, who is representing himself at the Port Authority hearings as Ki Mok. Jarod attempts to help Kim Che get past the blinding mental block that she placed upon herself as a terrified six-year-old child when her country fell into war in the "year zero," and she saw her family brutalized by the murderous Thon.
Kim Che convinces Jarod that she has spent most of her life trying to forget the horror that she witnessed as a child and cannot bring herself to face Thon again. Unwilling to let Thon's confirmation proceed unchallenged, Jarod kidnaps Lyle, then uses him to bait a trap for Miss Parker. With the two locked up, Jarod hopes to minimize the risk of being recaptured by The Centre when he goes to Thon's Port Authority confirmation hearing to testify against him. To everyone's surprise, a sighted Kim Che arrives at the hearing and proves Ki Mok true identity.
After his appointment to the Port Authority falls through, Thon is mysteriously killed during a routine prisoner transfer, making it impossible to tie him to Lyle or The Centre in any way.
Miss Parker reads an article from a Bangkok newspaper that proves Lyle to have had dealings with Chen Thon in the past. The article also reports the murder of two women, both of whom were found mutilated, their internal organs removed. Later, Miss Parker notices that her brother has the same tattoo that she saw on Ki Mok/Chen Thon. When Broots informs her that the figure in the matching tattoos is the Cambodian symbol for cannibalism, Miss Parker recalls the details of the Bangkok newspaper article and leaps to the conclusion that Lyle practices cannibalism. Sensing Miss Parker's revulsion and horror, Lyle encourages her to continue in her belief, as it provides him with a means of controlling her through her own fears.
