In Georgia, Detective Jarod "Doyle" works with profiler Samantha Waters, from the Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) to find a young chess prodigy who has been kidnapped.

When chess prodigy Bryce Banks secretly makes a midnight appointment for a face-to-face chess game with an on-line friend named Joshua, he becomes the victim of a kidnapper who took eight other boys in the late '80s. Samantha Waters from the Violent Crimes Task Force arrives to work with Jarod's team because six of the eight kidnapped boys were found murdered in the woods within 72 hours of their disappearance.

A lead from Mrs. Bryce about an overly eager journalist sends Jarod and his team to the young man who kidnapped Bryce, but he turns out to be a victim himself -- one of the two surviving boys from the previous kidnappings. Jarod methodically works his way through the young man's programming, trying to get him to reveal the location at which Bryce is being held. But his work also remind of his own experience with brainwashing, when Mr. Raines attempted to implant himself as a father figure to Jarod while he was at The Centre. Jarod's inner turmoil doesn't go unnoticed by Samantha Waters, leading to a late-night visit wherein she unsuccessfully tries to get Jarod to open up about his past.

Jarod eventually breaks through and learns where Bryce is undergoing his own brainwashing session. He and his team barely arrive in time to keep the real kidnapper, a child psychologist who lost his own son to a genetic disorder, from killing Bryce in the woods.

Both surviving boys from the '80s kidnappings are sent to a psychiatric facility for deprogramming, and Bryce is returned to his parents in time to win the Southeast Youth Division Chess Tournament.

Miss Parker believes that she has evidence that Brigitte is addicted to illegal substances and is having an affair with Mr. Lyle. The truth turns out to be even less palatable to Miss Parker: Brigitte was only celebrating her successful use of fertility drugs with Lyle and is pregnant with Mr. Parker's child.
